Open Water Diving Course
The Portsmouth Scuba PADI Open Water Course is your first step into the world of scuba diving. This comprehensive beginner program provides all the essential skills and knowledge needed to become a certified diver. It includes classroom sessions, pool training, and open water dives, where you’ll learn fundamental diving techniques, safety procedures, and how to use scuba equipment. Upon completion, you’ll earn a globally recognized PADI Open Water Diver certification, enabling you to dive independently to depths of up to 60 feet (18 meters). Whether you’re seeking adventure or looking to explore the underwater world, this course is the perfect starting point!

The PADI Open Water Diver Course at Portsmouth Scuba consists of three key components:

Academic Sessions
- The course includes three academic sessions, which can be completed in person at the dive shop or online through PADI eLearning.
- Upon registration, you will receive a book, dive log, and recreational dive planner table.
- Before the first class, you’ll need to complete the required forms, read chapters 1-3, and complete the corresponding Knowledge Reviews.
- If you answer "Yes" to any of the medical questions, a doctor’s approval will be required prior to participating in pool sessions.
- During the academic sessions, we’ll review your Knowledge Reviews, take applicable quizzes, and check out dive gear for your training.

Pool Sessions
- The course includes 3 or 4 pool sessions, held at the YMCA of the Seacoast in Portsmouth.
- The first session takes place in the shallow pool, while the remaining sessions are conducted in the deep pool.
- During these sessions, you’ll practice and master essential scuba skills under the guidance of your instructor.

Open Water Dives
- Once you’ve successfully completed your pool sessions, you’ll join your instructor for four open water dives in a lake and the ocean.
- These dives are typically scheduled over a weekend and allow you to apply your skills in a real-world diving environment.
What’s Included
Rental Gear: Wetsuit, BCD, Regulator, Weights, Tanks, Gloves, and Hood.
What You Need to Bring or Purchase
- Mask
- Snorkel
- Fins
- Booties
